At the recent Social Capitals conference (SOCAP 10) in San Francisco, a core group worked together to envision a fund for high risk, high impact social innovations. The thinking is summarized here. Please do comment and add thoughts.
The Maverick’s Fund will be:
A fully transparent $10 million fund to invest in Proof of Concepts / Proof of Impacts for potentially radical social innovations. It will be funded through peer donations from visionary social innovators; brand contributions (with Maverick brand positioning – Red Bull, Virgin, Apple etc); visionary HNI individuals; community or members dues for target group.
Initial thinking of criteria for investment is:
- Focus on massive reduction of a major social problem by tackling absolute root causes
- Can clearly articulate model of change and assumptions underlying design with a systems approach
- Impact measures and product / program design are fully aligned and integrated
- Must be 2+ organizations, to ensure collaborative mission is ambitious (and avoid limitations of sole social entrepreneur)
Precedents were:
- Stockwell Investment Clubs (RSA)
- Beardstown Ladies
- Book clubs
- Flash Mobs – Innovation Mobs
